Hanjin seeks funds to free stranded cargo worth $14bn

Image
GETTY IMAGES The failed Hanjin shipping group is desperately seeking funds to rescue $14bn (£10.5bn) worth of cargo stranded round the world following its collapse. Hanjin filed for receivership in South Korea last week after attempts to bail out the indebted company failed. Ports have refused to accept Hanjin cargoes without guarantees that port fees will be paid. However, creditors, banks and the South Korean government are all reluctant to put up the cash. The global economic downturn, fierce competition and falling prices has hit profits across the cargo shipping industry and Hanjin collapsed with debts of about $5.4bn (£4.1bn) last month. There are an estimated 89 Hanjin ships out of its 141-vessel fleet in difficulty, and some have been seized by creditors. The ships contain everything from computer parts to perishable food with many of the cargoes destined for the Christmas market in the US and Europe. Syria conflict: Senior militant rebel leader 'killed'

Image
Syria's war What's left of Syria after five years of war? Syria's refugee exodus What has happened to al-Qaeda? Syria peace talks and polls signal Assad's growing confidence A senior commander of the Syrian militant group formerly known as al-Nusra Front has been killed near Aleppo, rebel sources say. The group Jabhat Fateh al-Sham said on its Twitter account that commander Abu Omar Sarakeb died in an air strike in Aleppo province. It did not say which country's forces had carried out the air strike. Al-Nusra Front changed its name at the end of July, reportedly cutting ties with al-Qaeda at the same time. The Syrian government, Russia and a US-led coalition have all been carrying out air strikes against militant groups in Syria. A source quoted by Reuters said that Abu Omar Sarakeb and others had been targeted in a hideout in the village of Kafr Naha. Unconfirmed reports said several other senior figures in the group w...

Obama hits back at 'wacky' Trump jibes

Image
Credit: NBC News Barack Obama has chided Donald Trump as "wacky" and "uninformed" after the Republican candidate said Russia's President Putin was a better leader. Speaking in Laos, Mr Obama said that every time Mr Trump spoke it became clearer that the Republican contender was not qualified to be president. In a televised forum on Wednesday, Mr Trump had praised Mr Putin's "great control" and 82% approval rating. Mr Trump and rival Hillary Clinton had taken questions from military veterans. Mr Obama said: "I don't think the guy's qualified to be president of the United States and every time he speaks, that opinion is confirmed." The president pointed to the diplomatic work he had faced at both the Asean summit in Laos and the earlier G20 meeting in China. He said: "I can tell you from the interactions I have had over the last eight or nine days with foreign leaders that this is serious business. "You ac...

Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid lose transfer ban appeals

Image
Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid have lost appeals against Fifa bans on signing players in the next two transfer windows. The clubs contested a decision by world football's governing body to punish them for breaching rules over the transfer of foreign players under 18. Fifa initially ruled on the case in January, but the appeals meant both clubs could sign players this summer. The Spanish sides will now appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport. In a statement, 11-time European champions Real described the decision as "deeply unjust and contrary to the fundamental principles of disciplinary law". Atletico said they had already hired "a team of international experts to defend the case and protect the rights" of the club. Fifa's investigation concerned players aged under 18 who played in competitions for Atletico between 2007 and 2014, and Real from 2005-2014. "Both clubs are to serve a transfer ban that prevents them from registering...

Northern Ireland teenager sues Facebook over nude photo

Image
A 14-year-old Northern Ireland girl is suing Facebook after a naked photograph of her was posted on the site. Lawyers for the child claim the picture was blackmailed from her and repeatedly published online as a form of revenge. The girl is taking legal action against Facebook and the man who posted the photo in what is believed to be the first case of its kind in the world. At a hearing in the High Court in Belfast, a barrister for the girl said the picture was put on a "shame" page. He said that blocking its re-publication should have been a "red-line" issue for the company. Claim for damages "A naked 14-year-old picture was being put on a shame page," the barrister told the High Court in Belfast. "If they had blocked it all this subsequent publication of her naked image would not have taken place." But a lawyer for Facebook argued the claim for damages should be dismissed, saying the company always took down the ...

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas 'was KGB agent'

Image
REUTERS Image caption Palestinian officials said the allegation against Mahmoud Abbas was made up by Israel Israeli researchers have alleged that the President of the Palestinian Authority, Mahmoud Abbas, worked for the Soviet intelligence agency the KGB in the early 1980s. Researchers from the Hebrew University in Jerusalem say a Soviet-era document lists him as an agent. The president's spokesman described the claim as an absurd Israeli "smear". He suggested it was made to derail attempts to re-start Israeli-Palestinian peace talks. Researchers Gideon Remez and Isabella Ginor said the document, in an archive at Cambridge University, shows that Mr Abbas was a KGB spy when he lived in Damascus in Syria. The document, which the University of Cambridge's Churchill Archives Centre confirmed was authentic, was smuggled in to the UK by a defector called Vasily Mitrokhin. It is entitled "KGB developments - Year 1983" and Mr Abbas iden...
