What a wash out! World's first five-star underwater hotel delays opening for SIX YEARS ... despite 150,000 guests lining up to pay £9,000 to stay

It has been 13 years in the making. And the world's first underwater resort, which was due to open in 2008, has an estimated 150,000 potential guests on its waiting list.
But there are fears it may end up a wash out, as the Poseidon Underwater Resort in Fiji seems still no closer to opening its doors.  
Forty feet under the sea in an off-shore lagoon, the luxury resort is set to house 25 suites, as well as a restaurant, bar, gym, and even an underwater wedding chapel. Even the £9,000 per week price tag has not put off the hoards of people desperate to stay.

The Poseidon Resort comprises approximately 225 acres and is about a mile long. It is surrounded by a 5,000-acre lagoon and boasts pristine waters abundant sea life
Dreamed up by L. Bruce Jones, Chairman of U.S. Submarines, the resort claims to be perfect for the 'elite vacationer' and boasts panoramic views from the windows of the individual suites.
Building work for the structure, which began in 2001, is still not finished and the cost of construction is a closely guarded secret.

·         Accessible via a lift from the shore of the island, the resort promises guests pure luxury, each suite boasting a large Jacuzzi and wall-to-ceiling windows.
Seventy per cent of the exterior surface of each suite is make from transparent acrylic making the undersea views panoramic, and each suite will have underwater lights controllable from an inside switch and an external fish feeder, promising eye-popping views of multi-coloured marine life

There are also two undersea spa treatment rooms and an undersea wedding chapel. There will even be the opportunity to learn to pilot a 3-passenger submersible with a personal pilot.
On shore the resort will have a reception area, restaurant and lounge, swimming pool, luxury spa and hydrotherapy centre, gift shop and tennis courts as well as a nine-hole golf course and a marina. There will also be a dive shop with recompression chamber. 
The resort will have a private plane to fly guests to and from Nadi International Airport on the main island of Viti Levu.

The engineers at U.S. Submarines have incorporated many of the same safety systems found in tourist subs into the Poseidon Undersea Resort. 
A spokesperson for the hotel said: 'The resort is built to rigid safety requirements with high levels of structural integrity, large safety factors and fully redundant fail-safe systems.
'Each room is completely isolated from the central hall and other rooms with a double pressure proof door system and independent emergency life support systems.
'Tourist submarines carry approximately one million passengers each year and have a perfect safety record making them statistically the world's safest form of transportation.
'The engineers at U.S. Submarines have incorporated many of the same safety systems found in tourist subs into the Poseidon Undersea Resort.'

Underwater workouts: Guests will also have access to a nine-hole executive golf course, tennis courts, private splash pools and a fitness center
