The Venice Film Festival kicked off, with this year's jury posing for photographers. GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS
Justin Bieber was presented with six official Guinness World Records thanks to the success of his fourth studio album, Purpose. Among the records were most followers on Twitter (male), most streamed album on Spotify in one week and first act to occupy all top three positions simultaneously on the UK singles chart.

 Rihanna performed at the MTV Video Music Awards, where she was honoured with the Michael Jackson Vanguard Award, which recognises an artist's entire catalogue of work.

Two festival-goers wrestled in the mud at Leeds Festival at Bramham Park, West Yorkshire, which took place over the bank holiday weekend.

 Queen guitarist Brian May unveiled a plaque dedicated to the band's lead singer, Freddie Mercury, who died in 1991. The blue plaque, issued by English Heritage, was installed at the singer's former home in Gladstone Avenue in Feltham, west London.

 The British Journal of Photography launched a nationwide public exhibition bringing a selection of 100 portraits to digital screens in railway stations, roadsides and retailers. Portraits of Britain includes images of members of the public as well as famous faces like Nadiyah Hussein, winner of The Great British Bake Off.

This year's Blackpool Illuminations has been supplemented by an exhibition billed as the most significant survey of neon art to be staged in the UK. Tim Etchells' work Let's Pretend, which bears the slogan "Let's pretend none of this ever happened", has been installed on top of the Grundy Art Gallery. Inside are works by Tracey Emin, Joseph Kosuth and Gavin Turk.
