North Korea ballistic missile test sparks condemnation

Image
EPA North Korea's latest ballistic missile test has been widely condemned. South Korea and US officials said the missile, launched on Saturday night, flew east towards the Sea of Japan for about 500km (300 miles). South Korea's defence ministry called it an armed provocation to test the response of US President Donald Trump. Japan's Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, standing next to Mr Trump on a visit to the United States, said the test was "absolutely intolerable". United Nations resolutions forbid North Korea from carrying out missile tests - part of wider efforts to prevent it becoming a fully nuclear-armed power. South Korea's foreign ministry said that "North Korea's repeated provocations show the Kim Jong-un regime's nature of irrationality, maniacally obsessed in its nuclear and missile development". 'Hostility' Nato also condemned the missile test, with Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg urging North Korea "n...

US election 2016: Obama warns fate of world at stake

Image
REUTERS. AP President Barack Obama has urged Democrats of all ethnic backgrounds to get out and vote for Hillary Clinton, warning that the fate of the US republic - and the world - is at stake. He said her Republican opponent Donald Trump was a threat to hard-earned civil rights. President Obama was speaking at a rally in North Carolina. Mr Trump said Mr Obama should stop campaigning for Mrs Clinton and focus on running the country. "The bottom line is, no-one wants four more years of Obama," he told supporters in Pensacola, Florida. He said Mrs Clinton had become "unhinged" in recent days. The FBI is now investigating new emails that may be linked to its probe into Mrs Clinton's private email server. The agency's director, James Comey, has faced a fierce backlash for announcing the move just 11 days before the presidential election. Earlier, Mr Obama implicitly criticised him over the new inquiry into Mrs Clinton's email use. ...

Mosul battle: Militiamen 'torture' IS suspects on city outskirts

Image
AP Image caption Civilians carried white flags as the Iraqi army combed streets looking for IS fighters Militias involved in driving so-called Islamic State (IS) out of Mosul have been carrying out revenge attacks on men and boys in nearby villages, Amnesty International says. The group says people suspected of having ties to IS have been publicly humiliated, tortured and beaten. Iraq's special forces paused in their advance on eastern districts of Mosul on Wednesday to comb the streets for any remaining IS fighters. IS overran the city in June 2014. Meanwhile IS  released audio  purportedly from its leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, calling on its fighters to hold their ground and fight against the "enemies of God". Wednesday was the 17th day of an operation to re-take the city. The Iraqi army is working alongside Kurdish Peshmerga fighters, Shia militias and Sunni Arab tribesmen, with air and ground support from the multinational coalition against IS. It is ...
